The Real Book - Sixth Edition - C Edition comes with hundreds of songs and a whole lot of history. Dating back to the 1940s, jazz musicians used Fake Books for their nightly gigs. These Fake Books contained basic melodies or chords-the cliff notes of full compositions-enough for musicians to “fake” their way through a tune. Although popular, these books were illegally produced and distributed. In the 1970s, two Berklee students put together The Real Book, a more organized version of Fake Books, but it still failed to acknowledge copyright law and the composers who created these musical pieces. Various editions were produced over the years, but none of them were above board. Cue Hal Leonard!
Hal Leonard acquired the Real Book materials to bring musicians the first legitimate and legal version of the Real Book. The Real Book 6th Edition acknowledges the previous five illegal editions with its title and its contents.
